This update is early because I know many of you want to know about Debbie's trip to Shepherd Center in Atlanta. Just in............We will be going to Atlanta next Wednesday, Jan. 4. Debbie will be admitted as inpatient for approximately two weeks and then go to outpatient status for possibly two weeks. These times could be lengthened or shortened due to her progress or needs. I will remain in Atlanta with her and attend some classes at Shepherd. Our Lord has guided us well in Deb's journey and I feel He has made it possible for her to have had and continue to have the best.
Debbie and I also enjoyed a great Christmas at her parents home in Franklin last Sat. and Sun. with all Deb's immediate family present except one granddaughter who visited her yesterday. Today we had lunch out and Debbie had her hair washed and styled which she seemed to thoroughly enjoy. (Looks much better than when I do it)
She has really done well this week with therapy 3 days and two nurse visits.
We cherish your prayers and praise our Lord Jesus for his love and care.
Deb and I wish each of you a very blessed New Year!

Update on Debbie...Friday, Dec. 23, 2011.......by Charlie
Our Debbie has had a great week, and what a week!
First, Debbie attended church at Lantana Road Baptist and what a blessing it was to see her enjoying the service and her church family. God is so good.
Second, on Monday the CT scan results came and were the same as last month so the shunt implant is still working properly. Third, on Tuesday Debbie had a road trip to her primary care physician and then to her dentist in Crossville with a stop at the bank where she worked and another at Long John Silvers before returning to Cookeville NHC. She really enjoyed the day.
And finally, on Wednesday Debbie came home. She still must have care 24/7 but she is, as she says, in her real home. Praise the Lord! It's so good to have her here.
Today, we went out to eat and visited her bank's main office to enjoy a visit with her co-workers.
Tomorrow we plan to drive to Franklin, TN for Christmas with Deb's family. She has never missed a Christmas at her Mom and Dad's house in her life and I'm sure this will be the best one.
Plans are that Debbie will go to Shepherd Center in Atlanta in the early part of January for more therapy. We will probably be there at least a month.
Thanks for all your prayers these past months and for your continued prayers that all with go well with this new therapy and for Debbie's continued healing.
May God bless each or you and may you have a blessed CHRISTmas! We love you all!!!

Weekly Update on Debbie.... Sat. December 17, 2011....by Charlie
Debbie has had a good week. There is not much to report with several issues not finalized, however she continues doing well with her therapy with no set-backs.
Deb had a CT scan on Thursday with no results yet. She has an appointment with her primary care physician this Tuesday. We hope he will approve home healthcare so she can come home later in the week and finally, Shepherd Center of Atlanta's representative favorably evaluated Debbie this past Tuesday but we will not know if she is accepted until the first of the week.
So, lots of things going on and decisions to be made. Thank you for your prayers on these issues.
I plan to bring Debbie to our church service tomorrow. This will be her first time back at church and she seems excited about it......I know I am!
We wish you all a blessed week.

Debbie's Update......December11, 2011....by Charlie
Our Debbie has had another good week, mostly uneventful, but still making progress.
An auto ride had been planned for yesterday (Sat) but when Deb felt the cold air at the doorway, she decided "we'll not go today".
Lots of important decisions soon to be made concerning Shepherd Center in Atlanta and Deb's coming home so be in prayer that they are made correctly. Will keep you updated when these occur. We thank you so much for your continued prayers for Deb's healing.
Debbie and I want to wish each of you a very safe, happy and blessed Christmas season as we celebrate our Savior's birth.

Debbie's Update....December 3, 2011.............by Charlie
Debbie has had a great week.........Lots of therapy and no setbacks this week. You who visit her see this and know how much she enjoys your company and conversation. Her smiling face and wonderful attitude are certainly the bright spots in my day.
Our Lord continues to bless us with her continued improvement and we give Him all the praise and glory for it.
Deb and I have had a good evening. When I left her at 8:30 tonight, she was involved in watching "It's A Wonderful Life". Guess she is ready for Christmas.
May you all have a blessed week.

Debbie's Thanksgiving Update.....November 26, 2011.......by Charlie
Our Debbie has had an awesome week! Her right leg and ankle have not been noticeably swollen the last few days and she is walking with a walker more easily and for longer distances. (160 feet on Wed.) Deb's memory is still coming along slowly but her attitude and smile are at 100%!
On Wednesday Deb and I took a drive around Cookeville. This was her first time to ride in a regular car since her injury in June. And she seemed to really enjoy it.
So on Thanksgiving Day, Debbie got to come home for a few hours for the first time since we left on May 30 for our vacation. It was questionable as to how much she really remembered but I think she knew she belonged here by her comments and the way she looked at different things. Even as we were traveling home and I went a different way from the normal, Deb asked "why are we going here?" So I knew she remembered the roads to home also. Such a blessing to have Debbie home!
One funny thing happened while we were walking through the house when we went into the kitchen. As I made a point about her redecoration of the room, I suggested we walk over to the kitchen sink and wash some dishes. To which Deb replied "no, not today". Couldn't talk her into any work that day!
We enjoyed a great Thanksgiving meal supplied by dear friends Billy and Mary Ann Jolley and had a wonderful day at home together. Sure was hard to let Debbie go back to NHC and I pray she is home on a permanent basis very soon. Deb's therapists commented that she was more alert and responsive on Friday after her trip and told one of them she had been to her "real" home. So much to be thankful for!
Many of you helped me to be prepared for Debbie's visit and many of you prayed for her to handle the trip and visit well and we thank you so much. Our Lord Jesus is so good and so are his helpers. May God bless each of you and I pray you all had as blessed a Thanksgiving Day as Deb and I.

Debbie's Update....November 19, 2011.......by Charlie
Debbie has had another good week. She is responding well to her therapy and, using a walker, walked 140 feet on Friday. After that she played bingo again and won three games. There is no therapy on week-ends but she and I walked again today.
Deb's memory recovery continues but improvement seems slower now...........I guess it seems that way since I'm with her daily and want her to be well now, not later. She is doing great and we are so proud of her.
I plan for Debbie to have a day trip this week. We're planning a visit to our home to let her enjoy some familiar surroundings. She hasn't been home since May 30 when we started our vacation. Debbie getting to be home, even for a short time, will make a wonderful Thanksgiving this year.
We have so much to be thankful for and wish all of you a blessed Thanksgiving Day.
May our Lord bless each of you and thank you so much for your continued prayers.

Debbie's Update......November 12, 2011.......by Charlie
It's been two months today since Debbie was well enough to move from MUSC in Charleston to NHC in Cookeville. Looking back to September 12, I'm amazed at the progress Debbie has made in those two months and so very, very thankful.
Deb's condition continues to improve. She is walking more using the bars and with guidance uses a walker at times. I can also see more improvement in her memory and her therapists are pleased with her progress. She still has some swelling and stiffness in her right leg due to the clot but has had no setbacks since the previous post. Deb also has improved usage of her right arm and hand. And her attitude is wonderful! She really wants to complete her exercises. Debbie is ready to be able to go home.
We also attended the bi-weekly jamboree at NHC today where she listened and sang along to many of the hymns. She still enjoys religious music and I think she smiled the entire time we were there. Amazing Grace is still her favorite old hymn.
All I can say this week is "praise the Lord" for His continued blessings in Deb's healing and thank Him for each of you who continue to pray for her. May God bless you all!

Update on Debbie.....Nov. 5, 2011......by Charlie
Debbie had a good first part of last week but suffered a strong seizure at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. We were about to have dinner when the seizure occured. She was taken to Cookeville Regional Hospital Emergency and admitted that night and immediately given Keppra, a seizure preventing drug. Deb seemed to recover fully from the seizure in about 30 minutes but was hospitalized for tests and treatment. Drs said tests showed no additional damage from the seizure......praise the Lord! However she was diagnosed as being anemic and given two units of blood Friday. Dr said this was normal for patients who have been hospitalized for long periods, especially when several blood tests are performed. Dr also said Debbie would need to take the Keppra always to prevent future seizures. I pray she never has another.
Debbie was released from the hospital this afternoon and transported back to NHC of Cookeville. I think she was happy to be back with her caregivers there. After a good dinner, Deb was resting comfortably and had that beautiful smile. God is good!
Thank each of you for keeping her in your prayers and we wish you all a blessed week.

Debbie's Update.....Oct. 30, 2011.......by Charlie
Our Debbie has had another blessed week of improvement at NHC. Many of you who visit weekly or bi-weekly see great changes in Deb's responses and movements. On a daily basis I can see some small difference each day. These small steps, which are actually BIG, mean so much and we are so thankful for them.
Debbie's memory is improving and she has begun to assist her left hand with her right. We played bingo yesterday and when one of Debbie's numbers was called, she would say "we've got that one" and her right hand would go toward it. Certainly was enjoyable and what a blessing to see her having fun! Deb likes to say "Bingo" too..........She won four times!
Wanda, one of Debbie's physical therapists, said Debbie walked fourteen feet on the bars Thursday and I watched yesterday while she fixed her hair before going to the dining room. I didn't realize it, but she was using the wall mirror because I was instructed to move when stepping in front of it. Thank you Lord!
Debbie has two doctor appointments this Monday, the 31st. One with her neurosurgeon for ct scan follow-up and exam, and one with a MD for exam and long awaited removal of the peg tube. These visits are sometimes stressful for Deb and tax her strength but necessary.
Thank all of you so much for your continued prayers for Debbie's improvement and please pray that she does well during these medical visits and for good results.
We continue to praise our Lord Jesus for all He has done. May you all have a blessed week.

Update on Debbie.....Oct. 22, 2011.........by Charlie
Praise the Lord, our Debbie has had no setbacks this week and the swelling in her right leg due to the clot is almost gone. She has also resumed her full therapy schedule and is doing well.
Deb had a ct scan Friday to give her new neurosurgeon an updated file on her. Haven't yet received a report from this.
In short Deb has had a good week and our prayers continue to be answered in her healing.
She enjoyed a hymn singing group this afternoon and sang along with them on many of the songs. I always enjoy watching and hearing Debbie sing.

Update on Debbie.......Oct. 15, 2011.....by Charlie
Debbie has had another week of "mostly" improvement in her condition. Deb had a setback earlier in the week when swelling in her right leg required that she be transported to the hospital emergency room on Wednesday where the ultrasound test showed a blood clot. She is confined in bed for a week and back on a blood thinner.
She is in no pain however and her mental state and right arm paralysis are improved.
Deb should be back on regular therapy in a week and electrical stimulation on her right arm Friday allowed her to eat some of her food with her right arm and hand. Amazing.......isn't our God good! She would move her arm and hand slowly earlier this evening and would attempt to place her hand in mine when asked.
Deb has also become a phone enthusiast. She spoke with two friends and her mother tonight and really enjoyed the conversation.....I think they enjoyed it also.
Please keep her in your prayers that the swelling and clot disappear so the can resume full therapy next week.
One last thought......A couple of days ago I asked Debbie if she would sing Happy Birthday to me later this month on my birthday......She didn't hesitate and this is the song she sang:
Happy birthday to you, you live in a zoo, you look like a monkey, you act like one too..........I guess Debbie has recovered more than I realized! Made my day!
May you all have a blessed week.

Debbie's Update.....Oct. 8, 2011......by Charlie
Our Debbie's progress continues. Since arriving at NHC Cookeville from MUSC Charleston on September 12, Deb has done remarkably well both in physical and speech therapy. Her therapists are continually applauding her performance and are wonderful to keep me informed even by phone when I'm not present. They treat her well and she seems to enjoy most of the sessions.
Debbie sings along with others when she knows the song and I marvel at her ability to read her greeting cards and other material. And most of all she still has her beautiful smile and a wonderful attitude. God is good! She still has memory problems and right side paralysis but even these conditions are improving.
Prayers are being answered and we thank you so much for continued prayer. We love you all and pray you have a blessed Sunday and coming week.

Debbie's Update.....Oct. 1, 2011......by Charlie
Praise our Lord, another good week for Debbie. Deb still has paralysis of her right side but her attitude and personality continue to amaze us.
Louise, Deb's speech therapist called the first of the week and told me Deb had just eaten a half sandwich by herself with her left hand and she continues to respond to questions and finish sentences and phrases correctly. All these things are very exciting to us and we are so thankful for the healing power of our Father in heaven.
Another good Saturday with Debbie with visitors, a phone conversation with her Dad and more foot and hand massages. (And Margaret, I give the massages...not Debbie...lol)
Debbie has an appointment with a neurosurgeon Monday for a check-up and we pray that it goes well.
Your prayers are appreciated so much for her continued healing. May each of you have a blessed and worshipful Sunday.

Update on Debbie....2nd week at NHC....9/24/11....by Charlie
Our Debbie continues to improve! Therapy tires her but her therapists say she is gaining ground each day. I spent this afternoon and evening with her and I think this is possibly her best day yet.
Week-ends are therapy free and Deb is more rested and therefore more interactive with visitors. Three ladies who sing with her in our church choir visited this morning and told me she was laughing out loud and talking with them. They even got in a couple of songs. (They are quite crazy so I would have probably been laughing out loud myself had I been there.) When I arrived at 3 this afternoon, Deb was ready to go outside. We spent some time in the fresh air and had a good evening of dinner and looking at cards and TV with some neck, foot and hand rubs included.
We are seeing improvements in her memory and communication daily, however, she still has a long way to go. She still must have hands on help with everything but her attitude is nothing short of amazing. Praises to our Lord for all of this.
Thank each of you for your visits, cards, gifts, but especially for your continued prayers for Debbie. We love you and appreciate everything you do.

Debbie's Update....1st week at NHC/Cookeville......9-17-2011..by Charlie
We are blessed once again. So far NHC Healthcare at Cookeville has performed above our expectations. Debbie seems happy and well-cared for there and the nurses and staff appear qualified, very friendly and always ready to help with whatever she needs. Tuesday thru Friday, Deb has been participating in quite a bit of therapy and was fatigued from it in the afternoon and evening but I know it is good for her.
There was no therapy today, however, and she was well rested when I arrived. We spent some time outside and a couple of friends came by and she enjoyed talking with them. Through the afternoon and evening, she was more responsive and alert than in the past and I can tell she is slowly improving. We enjoyed a good dinner together tonight while watching the Volunteers and Gators going at it. Debbie seems much more aware of what is happening around her. And she enjoys one on one conversation.
Our Lord is answering prayer and we continue to pray for Debbie's complete recovery and praise Him for what He has already done.
Thank each of you again for all you do. Have a blessed week!

Debbie's Update......COMING HOME......Sept 12, 2011 ..by Charlie
I'm typing this post on the morning of Sept. 13 after a night of rest in MY bed.
But, now back to our Debbie. Mary, one of our dear MUSC RNS, reminded me as Debbie was leaving the hospital for Tennessee yesterday morning, that she had been with them for 100 days as of the 12th. What a milestone.....one no one wishes to accomplish.
Debbie left Charleston, SC, by ambulance at about 7 a.m. eastern time. I followed in the car. She was awake and alert. We stopped about 150 miles into the trip and she was still happy and said she was enjoying the ride. After some food and refreshments, we were on our way. Another fuel stop and checking on Deb in NC all is well until just over the Tennessee line near exit 440 the ambulance had a left rear dual tire blowout. He was driving below the speed limit and stopped safely but after 2 1/2 hours with a wonderful state trooper, civil defense personnel, tire changing personnel and the promise of a helicopter if needed, we were on our way again.
Through all this, the only person not upset or stressed was our Debbie. She was smiling, talking, eating and having refreshments during the episode. She and I even got in some of her exercises while waiting. (Our main concern was for her to have to lay flat on the gurney too long but again she was my hero. Again, she comforted me.) The sergeant said he would have no problem summoning a helicopter and closing the interstate for Debbie's transport if I deemed it necessary, but thank our Lord, she handled the situation better than I did.
So, after replacing three tires, we were on our way and finally arrived at NHC in Cookeville around 4:30 pm central with Deb's Mom and Dad anxiously awaiting. And praise Him, our Debbie was still happy looked no worse from the trip.......In fact, I think she was more perky. Isn't God good!!!!!
After settling in with a hot dinner, she looked very comfortable when left last night......a hard thing to do.......but she told me to "go get some rest".
So our Debbie is in Tennessee now, close to home. I will be so happy when she is all the way home and that is our prayer that she continues to improve more and more each day. Debbie's address is NHC HealthCare, 815 South Walnut Avenue, Cookeville, Tennessee 38501.
I plan to continue updating Deb's blog on a weekly basis. Will try for Saturday to let you know of her progress the week before. You can never know how much your prayers and support and every act of kindness have meant to us on this long long journey. We wouldn't have made it this far without the grace of our Lord Jesus and you, his angels, who have helped us along the way. May He bless each of you over and over again. This is from Debbie, myself, Herb, Betty and our entire family. We love you all and thanks so much for your continued prayers and support and love.

Sept 10 By Herb.......and Charlie
Monday 12th is D-day for Debbie to transfer to the rehab center. I know she is looking forward as we are. Its been a long summer but well worth it to see her progress to her current state. Each day I can see her making strides toward normal and this makes me very happy. Now a safe trip will compete the first leg of our mission to recovery. God Bless.
In addition to Herb's comments, the ambulance is scheduled to depart MUSC in Charleston at 6:00 a.m. and arrive at Cookeville mid afternoon. Our Debbie had a restful night and ate a good breakfast this morning. Again, thanks so much for all you have done and for your prayers for Debbie's safe and comfortable journey home. We love you all and wish you a blessed week-end.

DEBBIE'S UPDATE.......Special Edition.....Sept 8, 2011....by Charlie
It's been a long three and a half months but DEBBIE'S COMING TO TENNESSEE!!!!! Unless changes are made, Debbie will move to NHC of Cookeville, Tennessee on Monday, Sept. 12 where she will be in rehab until she becomes stronger and then will be evaluated by The Shepherd Center of Atlanta, GA and hopefully be allowed to go there for the remainder of her rehab. I mentioned she would be seeing many of her friends soon and got a big smile. This move to TN will be tiring for Debbie so keep her in your prayers. I will let you know of any changes and post the address later. We continue to thank our Lord Jesus for his guidance.
Debbie's Update......Thursday, Sept 8.......by Charlie
Debbie had a good day yesterday with therapy and a hair shampoo and conditioning. Herb even dried her hair with her dryer. She was alert we had enjoyed company again last evening. (Dale and Susy visited again) A representative from Shepherd Center in Atlanta will visit Friday afternoon to access Debbie's condition for admission approval to their facility. If she does not meet their criteria at this time, we will come to NHC at Cookeville until such time as she improves enough and will try again at Shepherd. Thanks again for all your support in prayer for these decisions that must be made and for Debbie's continued healing. Our Lord's Will be done in all things. God bless you!

Debbie's Update.......Sept 7.......by Charlie
Today's update is a ditto of yesterday except Debbie had some most enjoyable visitors from Tennessee last night. Susy and Dale Watson from Crossville visited and I know Debbie enjoyed them, especially Susy. In reference to Debbie's hospital dismissal, she has been approved for NHC in Cookeville, TN but we have applied to Shepherd Center (a intensive care brain trauma re-hab facility) in Atlanta. We are looking for the BEST for our Debbie and they are highly recommended. Only heard of this facility last Saturday so please continue to pray that we will be guided to and accepted for the best possible care and rehabilitation for Debbie. May you all have a blessed day.

Debbie's Labor Day Update....Sept. 5, 2011`....by Charlie
Praise our Lord, Debbie has had a good week-end. She slept well and her temperature was 98.6 this morning. We are,as we know you are, praying for her continued healing. Thanks for all you do and to our Lord Jesus for what he does. Have a blessed Labor Day!

Debbie's Update......September 4, 2011......by Charlie
It's hard to believe but it's been three months today since our Debbie became ill. She has had several set-backs since the initial attack but her strength continues and becomes our strength. So far her condition has not changed since the removal of the antibiotics. She still sleeps a lot and sometimes it's hard to get her to eat enough. Debbie is a fighter and has come a long way but has a long way to go. We know our Lord Jesus can heal her mind and body completely and pray to Him continually for this. Please pray also for guidance concerning Deb's rehabilitation. Thank you all for your prayers and may you have a blessed Lord's Day.

Debbie's update.........Sept 3, 2011........by Charlie
After a "bla" day Friday and a ct scan that showed a better result than the last one, (praise the Lord) Debbie was feeling much better last night. She drank lots of liquids and had a good dinner and slept better overnight than I have seen. This morning she was awake and alert and her temperature after a full day without antibiotics was 98.2 degrees. WONDERFUL!! We continue to pray that this is a good sign that she is almost ready to come HOME. Love to you all and may you each have a blessed week-end.

Debbie's Update......Sept. 2.........by Charlie
Debbie ate a good dinner last night with apple pie and ice cream and had a good night's sleep. One of the patient care techs elected to give her another full shampoo and conditioning this morning because she was off duty for week and was afraid Debbie would be in Tennessee before her return. Debbie always enjoys a shampoo! And we thank all her caretakers for loving and caring for her so well. She was awake and alert and having breakfast when I left this morning. Deb is no longer on any antibiotics as of today and we are praying no temp or other problems will occur, but that her mind will become clearer as her body is free of them. Our Debbie has come a long way in recovery but still has a long way to go. She is already a miracle of our Lord and He will be with her always. Dr Varma is speculating that with no problems Debbie may get to return to Tennessee possibly the end of next week. Will keep you posted of when and where. And thanks to all you prayer warriors for your continued thoughts, prayers and support. We love you all.

Debbie's Update.....September 1, 2011.......by Charlie and Herb
It's hard to believe that September is already here and we're still in Charleston. But Debbie is only receiving one antibiotic now and so far no noticeable effects from the removal of the other three so maybe we'll be back in Tennessee soon. Deb did get to go down to the lobby yesterday but it was so hot and late in the day did not go outside. Herb is trying to get an earlier trip for her today because she rested well last night and it's only 80 here now and she tires easily so early is much better. We wish all of you a blessed Thursday the first of a new month.
The one remaining antibiotic will be removed tomorrow and the Doctors will monitor her over the weekend and if she does well, look out Tennessee here we come.
She was outside this morning and sat in the sun with the wind blowing in her hair for about 10 minutes and in the shade for another 10. Debbie seem to enjoy her outing but tired her so we returned to her room. God Bless

Update on Debbie.....August 31.......by Charlie
Debbie had a good yesterday and last night. She sat in a chair for over an hour yesterday and had quite a bit of speech and physical therapy. She was alert for a little while last night but slept most of the early evening and night because of fatigue. However, she was alert this morning at 5:00. I think her Dad is going to take her on another wheelchair trip today and I hope she enjoys it...........Another antibiotic is to be stopped today....that leaves only one and so far no side effects.................."Show me a person who is extremely generous in the giving of her time and love to other people, and I'll show you a person who always has people "there" for her in times of her need." Thank each of you who continue to be "there" for Debbie. We love and cherish you!

Debbie's update.....August 30..............by Charlie
Debbie got to go outside yesterday for a brief time shortened due to outside temp and humidity but seemed to enjoy the ride and looked so beautiful...........She is still weak and tired quickly from the ride and visiting with everyone on the way out. One more antibiotic will be withdrawn tomorrow leaving only one and we pray for no side effects. Last night one of the patient care techs brought her a beautiful blanket she had made. When she spread it across the bed, Debbie's eyes lit up and what a smile! She had a restful and talkative night and she and Herb were having breakfast when I left at 8:00 this morning. May our Lord Jesus bless all the "angels" he has placed in our path. Have a blessed Tuesday.

Debbie's update....August 29.....by Charlie
Debbie had a very alert Sunday afternoon and evening and even watched New Orleans play Oakland last night. When I asked if her team was winning, she answered "I don't know", but she seemed to enjoy the action. Deb has a wheelchair ride scheduled this morning for a trip outside in the park......her first time outside since June 4. She has had a restful night after 11:00 so I hope she enjoys the outdoors. Thank God for all. We wish you all a blessed Monday.....

Debbie's Update for August 27 by Charlie
As stated in the previous message, Debbie underwent emergency surgery yesterday for shunt revision. The line to the shunt became blocked by tissue and had to be replaced with a longer one. She came through the surgery well and other than 11:00 pm x-ray and 2:00 am ct scan and all other night interruptions, she rested as well as could be expected overnight. Dr Turner said this morning that the ct scan and x-ray showed the shunt was now working as it should. Deb was still sleeping when I left earlier, but looked great. Again, thanks so much for all your prayers and love. And have a blessed week-end and Lord's day.

Debbie's Update for August 26, 2011........by Charlie
Debbie took a wheelchair ride to the waiting room area yesterday with her dad but did not get to go outside because of the type chair. Weather permitting, will try again today. She is having some tests this morning including a CT scan. I will edit this post when we have some results. Please continue to pray that these results are good. God bless you all.
Debbie's ct scan this morning showed increased swelling and pressure and further tests showed a blockage in the inlet tube to the shunt drain. Debbie just returned from emergency surgery and is resting in her room. So far all went well and we are praying that this is the LAST surgery she will need. Thank you for your prayers. We love you and knowing you are there helps us make it through these ups and downs.

Debbie's Update......August 25........by Charlie
Deb's trachea was removed yesterday as planned and one antibiotic discontinued. No side effects so far and three more to go. Physical therapy sat her in a chair for over an hour again and voice therapy worked with her. Herb said she was very alert and talkative. Last evening she was somewhat tired but after a good night's sleep (for both of us) she was smiling and talking this morning and enjoying a cup of coffee. I know you are as thankful as we are for our Lord's blessings. We may be coming home to Tennessee in a week to 10 days.....May you all have a great day!

A special thanks!.....
Can't say thank you enough to Jack and Helen Heron of Mt Pleasant, SC!..... very special people...your kindness will never be forgotten...(from the Haynes and Hesson family)
August 24 By Herb and Charlie
Debbie had a good day and a good night. Today the trachea will come out getting her closer to moving out to rehab center. The Doctors have made the decision to discontinue the two most potent antibiotics today and see how she responds to this. Things are looking better for Debbie and it is about time, but God knows best and we except that. Love to all and our thanks again to each of you for your outpouring of prayer and other wonderful acts of love and friendship and support during Debbie's illness and always praises to our Lord Jesus for his healing power and mercies.

Debbie's Update.....August 23.......by Charlie
As previously mentioned by Herb that Deb was up in a chair yesterday as part of her physical therapy, the work-out exhausted her and she slept from about 2:30 p.m until 11:30 p.m last night which made for dinner at midnight. It's been a long time since I had dinner at midnight but Deb can even make that enjoyable. After dinner and some talk and music, we were settled in at about 2:30 a.m. And she is still resting. Drs are supposed to cap the trachea today. If she handles this well, it should be removed tomorrow. They are also taking away one antibiotic at a time. ..........And, we have happy doctors and nurses this morning, or I should say full happy doctors and nurses. Betty, Deb's mother, graciously provided a catered breakfast at 6:30 for the night and day shifts in gratitude for their kind, professional, expert and loving care given to Debbie and for keeping Herb and I out of trouble. THANKS BETTY! Also, we have an unwanted visitor headed our way. Hurricane Irene in bearing down on the eastern U.S. coastline. Pray she passes us by...... May you all have a blessed day!

August 22nd By Herb
Additional note to Charlie's post Debbie sat up in a chair for 3 hours and 30 minutes today which exhausted her but was glad to see she can stay up that long. They will be takings some tubes out today which will give her some more freedom to move about.Things are looking up for her. God bless all
August 22.....Debbie's update......by Charlie
Just a note to let you know Debbie's progress is still going well. She had a good Sunday day and night with a nice full hair shampoo yesterday afternoon followed by a good nap and dinner. She then listened to gospel music on Pandora.com internet radio for over an hour and a half. This was new to her and she seemed to really enjoy it as she sang along with some of the songs and the laptop on her bed really captivated her attention. Drs will decide today about the trachea. We are wishing each of you a beautiful blessed Monday.

Sunday, August 21 update by Charlie
Praise the Lord, our Debbie continues on the recovery road. She ate a good dinner last night and talked and talked. We talked, I think, at 10, 2, and 4, but slept in between. She is still somewhat confused but she seemed to enjoy every minute of our conversations....I know I did! Dr Varma will be back tomorrow and Dr Alex says they will probably cap the trachea Tuesday and possibly remove it Wednesday. Drs are very pleased with Deb's progress since surgery and we are praying it continues. We wish you all a blessed Sunday and again thank you for all your prayers.
P.S. I asked one of the nurses how to spell trachea.

August 20 update by Herb
I think Debbie is doing great talking with a lot of wit about her. She makes us all laugh and enjoy talking with her. If all goes well they will cap her trak next week and later remove it. Finely things are looking up for her and its about time with all the bad luck she had in the past, but God knows best. We love her very much.GOD BLESS ALL
August 20 .........Debbie's Update.......by Charlie
Debbie continues to do well after her surgery. She talked quite a bit yesterday and physical therapy and respiratory therapy worked with her so she has slept all night. Quite a day for the first day after surgery. Dr Varma is very pleased with her progress. We wish each of you a happy and blessed week-end with a worshipful Sunday. We are praising our Lord Jesus here.

August 19.......Post surgery update from Debbie....by Charlie
Debbie had a very good night. She was talking last evening before settling in for a good night's sleep (for her and me). When she returned from an early CT scan this morning, I asked "how was the ride?" She replied "it was a blast"......so I see her wit has returned. Her vitals are strong and temp is normal. The Dr team came in and said in looking at the scan the shunt implant is working. We pray that it continues. Thank you so much for your constant tireless praying. We can see our Lord Jesus is in the miracle business. Have a great day with our love.

Deb's surgery update.....Aug. 17....by Charlie
Debbie's surgery is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday Aug. 18. We know she will be in your prayers and thank you so much.
Beautiful Day in Charleston.....August 17 Update by Charlie
Debbie has had a blessed night....alert, restful, happy and with good news. Dr Varma spoke with her early last evening (Tues) and told her she is doing exceptionally well and her shunt surgery will be done early Thursday morning, the 18th. She was happy and talkative with him and also had great phone conversations with our "sister" Jenny Yeary in TN and also her Dad. In the middle of her late dinner, Deb's door opened and our pastor, Bro. Scott Johnson and wife, Kelly were standing there. What a blessing for them to visit and pray with Debbie before this long awaited last surgery. Debbie really enjoyed their visit and slept very well after wearing herself out talking with them. Deb's surgery is planned for early tomorrow so thank you for all your prayers that it is a complete success with a speedy recovery. The trach will be removed next and we will soon be looking northward for our return to Tennessee. Praises to our Lord Jesus!

August 16...........Update...........by Charlie
Not much to report today except that Deb continues to improve...White blood count down to 33. She rested well and was alert and having breakfast with her Dad this morning when I left them. Also, she received a special gift from Laura, one of the nurses in training, who brought her a memory foam neck and head support pillow this morning. After laying on it for about an hour Debbie replied that her neck felt "wonderful". How thoughtful and loving these professionals are at MUSC. Many not only care for their patients as required, they show their love for them! Praises to our Lord for putting them in our path.

FLASH!!! Surgery Update........by Charlie August 15......
NO SURGERY TODAY.......Debbie's surgery has been postponed for at least two days. White blood count is slightly up so Dr Varma elected to postpone the surgery for safety. Deb is doing fine and is ready for a late breakfast. Thanks for the prayers and will keep you posted.

Surgery Update.......Aug 14.............by Charlie
Dr Vandergrif is planning to do Debbie's surgery to implant the shunt spinal fluid drain tomorrow, Monday the 15th. Don't know the time yet but probably afternoon. Please pray this is a complete success. I've talked with Deb about it tonight and she says it'll be ok. She is resting as I write this and she looks so wonderful. I pray for the Lord to keep his healing hands on her and wrapped in the Holy Spirit. Amen.
August 14---By Herb

August 13, 2011...........Debbie's Update..........by Charlie
After her exciting day yesterday, another great night and morning for Debbie. The nurses are all so happy with her improvement and come by regularly for a visit. Deb always has a big smile for them and talks with them. She was awake and alert this morning at 4 after a malfunctioning alarm kept she and I awake half the night but was ready for conversation and even sang a couple of songs. The antibiotic Drs are giving again has stopped the elevated temp but they still have to find the cause. Another culture will be done today and one blood culture already taken will have no results for a couple of days. When I left the hospital at 8 Debbie was having breakfast with her dad and talking with everyone. Pray for her continued health return and that Drs will find the cause of elevated temp and stop it so the antibiotic isn't necessary so she can have her final necessary surgery. May you all have a blessed week-end.

Our Debbie's Update......August 12......by Charlie
Other than the low-grade temp, Debbie has had an outstanding night. She is eating real food well and is now talking out loud where all can here. What a blessing. When I left her earlier, she and Herb were having breakfast and talking. It's great that he is here for her during the day in order for me to have some rest. Drs are doing more tests and have added one antibiotic trying to find and stop whatever is causing the temp increase. Surgery is once again on hold until ??. But, for now, she is feeling and doing great. All the wonderful MUSC Hospital staff who know Debbie are in love with her and we thank them so much for their expert care.

Update by Brian L.
I am so elated with Mom's progress over the past couple of months since I saw her on my last visit. It is truly a blessing. I would like to share a few words about my grandfather (Herb, Duck, Grandaddy, Dad, or whatever you call him). I have seen some strong, motivating, and nurturing people in my life, but none like my grandaddy. What I saw in the two days on my visit are truly amazing and a strong example of what family is all about. I saw my Grandfather do things that my Mother did to me when I was young, which is a hard thing for a man to do. The attention and devotion he gives is nothing like I have ever seen, and may never see again. His faith and compassion for my Mom is so deep and he expects nothing in return but a hope for a speedy recovery. In my mind, he is the greatest man on the earth and a wonderful role model for myself and my family. I hope one day I grow up to be just like him. Thanks for your hard work, friendship, and unconditional love for your family! You are the nucleus...
Debbie's Update.......August 11........by Charlie
Debbie's afternoon yesterday was not the best. Going from tube feed to soft food by mouth allowed her sugar to drop. She also ran an elevated temp overnight which gives us concern. But she woke up last evening and ate a good dinner and sugar is back to normal this morning and she is feeling much better, smiling and talking. She did have to take tylenol last night for her temp and Drs are doing some tests today for any signs of infection. Surgery is planned for Monday and no infection can be present if it is to proceed. She slept well after midnight and was bright-eyed this morning at 6. Deb's son Brian drove down from Knoxville yesterday and we, especially Debbie, were glad to see him. He and Herb are with her today so if she makes them behave she should have a good day. Her cousins Donnie and Janet left yesterday to go back to Gainesville and we all certainly enjoyed their visit. Please keep, as I know you will, Debbie in your prayers that she will be strong and infection free for a successful surgery next week. Thank each of you so much for all you do and thank our Father in heaven for His love.

Debbie's good news update......Aug 9.....by Charlie
Just thought all Debbie's friends and family would want to know she passed her eating test today and I just had the privilege of giving her the first meal tonight. She had mashed potatoes, mashed green beans, soft chicken, peaches and sweet tea. She ate some of each said everything tasted good except the peaches. She also had two cousins from Gainesville, GA visit this evening and really enjoyed them. Ronald and Janet will be back tomorrow so she will have another good day. It was a blessing to see them. Dr Varma came by tonight and said Deb will probably have the shunt surgery the first of next week if she continues to improve. God bless each of you for your continued prayer. Our Lord hears and is working here.
Debbie's Update for August 9 by Charlie
Debbie's yesterday {Monday} and last night have been, as she would say, "awesome". Physical therapy had her sitting up on the side of her bed and when asked how she felt, "awesome" was her answer. Her vitals remain normal and Drs are slowly taking her off the antibiotics. They dropped one last night. She is going on a field trip today for an eating test and chest x-ray to make sure she is swallowing properly. Therapy has already been giving her applesauce and the nurses expect her to pass the eating test. Although she is napping at the moment, she was awake at 5 this morning and she and I have had a name spelling and counting class. Sad part is, I think she is better at it than I am. So Deb's day and mine is starting out great as we hope yours is. May each of you have a blessed day. We love you!

Update August 8--By Herb
To add to Charlie's post the Doctor told him that they will start weining her off antibiotices since she is doing so good. Also in a couple of day start reducing her trak so we can here her talk. We have some trouble reading her lips when she puts several words together. Her surgery date has not been set but if she keeps progressing it will be soon. Her son Brian is coming Wednesday to stay a few days and she is looking forward to that. Have a nice day.
Debbie's Update....Aug 8..........by Charlie
Debbie's condition remains improved Sunday day and overnight. She seems more alert even this morning, although she is napping at the moment, she has been very responsive and "happy" earlier today. Antibiotics are still working and her condition is stable and strong. Shouting praises today for her continued improvement. Love and miss you all. HAPPY MONDAY!

August 6.....Update on Debbie...........by Charlie
Our Debbie had an exceptional day yesterday and night last night. Her temp remains normal with the new antibiotic and her responsiveness is wonderful. She makes sentences and speaks aloud with the valve on her tract. She even told me, Betty, Herb and Brian this morning that we were being too loud and smiled about it. She looks so wonderful and alert to her surroundings. The Lord Jesus' Hands at work! Dr said she will remain on this antibiotic a few days while they try to find where the infection was coming from. Another spinal fluid sample is to be taken today. Thanks so much for all your prayers, love, calls, gifts, cards, e-mails, visits and for just being there. We cherish each of you and hope you know how much you are loved back by us. May God bless you.

Deb's update.....Aug 4 late night........by Charlie
A quick note to let you all know Deb has had a good day. She is answering more questions, taking small amounts of ice, water and pasty food by mouth, and increasing her arm and leg movements. Her temp remains normal to slightly low without tylenol. Prayer and antibiotics are working. Tonight she has been talking with me, looking at pictures, reading some of your cards and listening to her cds. Nurses say they are going to give her a pedicure and manicure later tonight as she is very alert and not very sleepy yet at 11:20 pm. Just wanted to pass along some good news. All praises to our Lord! ...........................................................................................................................................NOTE: It's now 7:30 a.m. and Deb has had a very good night.............Great way to start Aug 5. Deb and I hope you all have a great and blessed day too.
August 4 am Update on Debbie.........by Charlie
Debbie had a restful night on her new air mattress. Drs would not stop antibiotics for fear of complications but did begin a new one yesterday. So far, no temp increase to speak of since early yesterday morning. She has not had meds to keep it down so we are praying this is the antibiotic needed to heal the infection. Also dear friends and family visited from Tennessee yesterday. Always a great blessing to see them and Deb's mother Betty, and brother Brian, will be with her for a few days. Thanks to all for continued prayer. NOTE: It has been two months today since Debbie became ill on June 4.

Debbie's update.....August 3 a.m........by Charlie
Debbie has had a very restful night with temp up and down with meds to control it. She responded mouthing words last night and we watched America's Got Talent together. (she always liked that show) She was able to tell me she was comfortable at 11:15 last night and went to sleep. When temp and heart rate are down, she is more responsive as this morning when whe was answering some questions and is beginning to move, especially her left side more and more. As Herb wrote previously, Dr Varma said he intends to speak with the infectious disease drs about holding all antibiotics for 24 hours and then take more blood and fluid samples to see is a fungus or infection is being hidden by them. There will be no surgery until all infection is gone. Keep her in your prayers that the drs will find the problem and again thanks for everything you all are doing. All of you are so amazing as is our Lord.
August 3-- By Herb
Debbie is about the same maybe a little more responce to comands. They think maybe the medication she is getting may be masking the infection so they are taking off all med for 24 hours to see if infection will show up and treat that infection. We are hoping this will rid her body of all infection so she can have the surgery to instal the shunt. Keep praying.

Debbie's Aug 1 pm update........by Charlie
To all Debbie's wonderful family and friends.........Debbie has IMPROVED today!!! Praises to our Lord for his goodness and mercy!!! When I arrived back at the hospital this afternoon, Herb gave me the great news.....a good day......Deb is responding with answers and comments to questions and requests and beginning to move slightly and even a yes nod. Temp is still elevated and another spinal sample was taken minutes ago for a 48 hour culture. Drs still trying to find infection site and type. Thank all of you for your prayers and thank our Lord for answered prayer. God bless each of you.
August 1.......Debbie's update............by Charlie
Debbie's condition remains virtually the same as last reported. Non-responsive and increased temp. All infection tests so far negative with the last from the drain tube to come tonight. Even the Drs are puzzled by this and surgery is on hold until temp problem is explained. Thanks for all each of you has done and are continuing to do on Deb's behalf. Don't know what we would do without you. Love to all.

Update on Debbie......July 30.....7 p.m. by Charlie
Deb's temp continues high today and white blood count is elevated. Dr Chauntry thinks meningitis is back. Dr Yana is replacing the spinal fluid drain and sending it for cultures as this is being written. She thinks the tube itself may contain the virus. Surgery is off the table for Monday. Please keep our Deb in your prayers. Thanks so much for all each of you have done and continue to do. We love you!
Julu 30--By Herb
Debbie gave us a scare yesterday when her blood pressure drop extreamly low for a period of time. The doctors did not know, for a while why, but later desided she might have been dehydrated. Today she is almost back to normal and hopefully she can go for surgery on Monday. Keep her in your prayers that the surgery will be a success. Lots of love.

Julu 29--By Herb
Debbie had a good night with a lot of sleep. Her temp.was down and did not require and med. Her CT scan did not show any infection but did show some ventricler inlargement so they are taking more fluids from her brain to help this. If her temp remains normal throught out the week end they will do surgery to place the shunt in. Pray that she can recover from this surgery. Love to all.

July 28--By Herb
Debbie sleeps a lot these days but is doing good for the most part. She has ireregular heart beat so they did a Ekg and it was good. They also checked her electrlites and they were good. All of this is try and find a reason for her elevated temperture. Today they did a Xray of her heart and lungs and did a vascular test for blood clot but found none. Right now the reason for her elevated temp. is unkown. Surgery is sometime in the future but we don't know when. Forgive me of my spelling.

July 27 7 p.m. Debbie's Update by Charlie
Debbie has had a good day in some ways and not so good in others. She started the day with responses to questions by mouthing answers...wonderful!!! But an irregular heartbeat brought ekg and blood balance tests which showed no irregularities. She is resting comfortably now and has been awake for a while. No word yet on when Dr Vandergrif plans to implant the shunt. Thank you or continued prayer.

July 26- By Herb
I received a call from Charlie at the hospital and they have called Debbie's surgery off for a few days due to something they found in her blood work. We are not sure what they found but we are pleased they are taking all precautions to make this one a success. Love to all.
July 26- By Herb
Debbie did not have a good day as she sleeps most of the day. She still does not respond to any thing we say but looks very good. Tommorow first thing she will have surgery to put in place another shunt and hopefully it will be a sucess as last time infection required surgery to remove the first shunt. Please we need your prayers more that every for her recovery. God bless.
Ups and Downs....Deb's update......July 26,8 a.m. by Charlie
Deb's night has been on the downside. She slept most of yesterday and last night and has been hard to wake. Her temp also elevated overnight but is back to normal this morning with meds. Drs Varma and Vandergrif are out of town so shunt procedure is on hold due to their absence and also the increased temp. Deb is also not responding again. So this is titled ups and downs. She still needs your and our prayers and we thank you so much for them.

Debbie's update......July 25 8 a.m.........by Charlie
This update is a carbon copy of yesterday in stats and rest. However, Deb is beginning to answer some questions by forming the words with her mouth. Yesterday, she had responded with her Dad some and when I saw her yesterday afternoon, when told who I was and who she was, she responded with "my name is Debbie"! Praises to our Lord for these signs of healing! And the final spinal fluid test for infection is NEGATIVE. No news of exactly when the shunt surgery will happen....just continue to lift her up to Him. We are so thankful for everything you do, but especially your prayers.

Debbie's update....July 24........by Charlie
Debbie's condition remains the same this morning and she had a very good night. Praying the good rest is helping heal her. Dr Vargas is on duty today and verified the third fluid sample was still showing negative for meningitis infection and the shunt drain would probably be placed sometime in the early part of this week. We, as we know you are, are praying that this one works and Debbie's condition and responses will improve. Wishing all of you a blessed and worshipful Sunday.

July 23--By Herb
Not much to report today. Debbie is about the same and the last two fluid samples were free of infection with one more to go and if it shows no infection hopefully they will be able to do surgery to install the shunt and get her back to normal . Thanks for your prayers.

July 21- By Herb
Debbie is about the same and does not respond to our commands. They have almost taken care of her infections and the Doctor said he might do the surgery to install the shunt the middle or later part of next week. Hopefully it will go better that the last. Please keep her in your prayers for her recovery.
Thursday, July 21.......Deb's update by Charlie
An uneventful yesterday and last night for Debbie. Vitals remain great but no more responses to speak of. She has had a good night's rest which is good for her healing. Looks beautiful and as if she could speak at any time. She was watching television when I left this morning and has been listening to her gospel cds. Dr Varma said the music would be good for her. We're praying, as we know you are, that she is well soon. Wishing each of you a blessed day.

Breaking News....July 20..........Debbie's update by Charlie
Another good night for Debbie AND! She answered a couple of questions this morning by closing her eyes for a yes. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful to see this step in the right direction! This is the way she started her forward progress before the infections set her back. And we pray it continues as before. Praise our Lord for answered prayer and thank you all for your faithfulness in your prayers to Him.

Debbie's update....July 19..........by Charlie
Deb's condition remains the same today. She had a good day yesterday with lots of therapy but still no change in responses and a restful night last night. Her mother, Betty, arrived yesterday for a few days and she will be good therapy for Debbie. Last time Betty came, she began to mouth sentences and increased movements. Looking forward to that day again. Keep praying and love to all of you.

Debbie's update......July18......by Charlie
Debbie has had a restful and non-eventful night. Dr Relic took another spinal fluid sample this morning and also informed us that the first sample came back negative for active meningitis infection and we were on the 7th of a 10 day countdown to stop the antibiotics if two more tests came back negative. Praise the Lord! Then he said they will be looking at weaning her from the external drain and we pray her body takes over where she will not have to have the internal shunt drain. She still does not respond but looks great and as though she could get up and walk out of the room. We pray as the infection is going away, and her brain becomes more rested she will become alert again as she was. We are so thankful for the small steps. God bless each of you for your prayerful support.

July 17 update on Debbie..........by Charlie
Yesterday and overnight, Deb's condition remains almost the same with good vitals and she has been moved to a private room now (922 East). She rested well overnight and Janie, her room is decorated again! Also, finally, her temp has remained below 100 with no medication all night. She still responds very little but this should improve as her brain heals from the meningitis. These small steps are so wonderful. Also, more wonderful friends from our church in Crossville came yesterday. What would we do without family and friends and of course our faith in Christ. We wish you all a blessed Sunday as you worship Him. Thanks again for everything you do.

Friday, 7/15, update on Debbie......by Charlie
Another "up" day for our Debbie. Her vitals look better than before the shunt in and out surgeries and she passed an e.e.g. this afternoon. Dr. said her brain looked sleepy. If we were to endure what Deb has been through, wonder what ours would look like? Anyway, Dr gave us some encouragement....no seizures were recorded. Deb has had a restful day and tonight looked as if she was ready to respond. David, her nurse today, said she looked like she was very close. Pray for continuing progress and that she can be weaned off the external spinal fluid drain without the internal shunt replacement being necessary. Prayers are being answered and we are so thankful for everyone's prayers and our Lord's answers. God bless you all!

Improvement update.....July 14....9 p.m. .........by Charlie
Praise the Lord, our Debbie was resting comfortably tonight after Dr. Hayes changed her meds today. She still has a long way to go but is at least getting needed rest to help her heal. Dr Hayes says other infections are under control and Dr Varma says spinal fluid bacteria has been identified and is being treated with proper antibiotics. Sample was taken today and will see results tomorrow. Vitals were good tonight and "brain storming" (as drs call it, where pulse and breathing cycle up and down sometimes to high levels) was minimal. Deb still does not respond but looked beautiful sleeping tonight. Prayers, Rest, and Time will help in her healing along with our Lord's helpers provided at MUSC Hospital. Praise Him for his mercy!
July 14--By Herb
There is not much to report today as she has not made any progress. Her heart rate and temperture continue to go up and down, and it takes a large amount medication to keep it in check. We are at the point that we need something to change for the good to give us hope for her recovery. Please continue to keep her in your prayers. Thanks. Lots of love.

Our Debbie's update.....July 13........by Charlie
Another rough day for Debbie. Not much change, but maybe slightly less stable. Drs and Nurses are really trying. She was resting and it seemed to be a peaceful rest when we left her at 11 p.m. tonight. Thanks so much for keeping her lifted up to our Heavenly Father.

Our Debbie's day...July 12........by Charlie
Debbie is still fighting her infections. Her vitals are much better than yesterday but she is still being given multiple antibiotics and is in ICU. She sees movement but does not respond. Dr Hayes says as the infection subsides, her responses will increase. Dr Beth says we have to take it one day at a time and continue to lift her up in prayer. Love these drs who believe in Him. Deb looks much better but has a long way to go. Thanks to all of you who prayed unceasingly last night during her surgery and all of you who continually lift her up to our Lord. I and her family love and appreciate every one of you. More dear friends visited from TN today also. Such a blessing. God always provides.

Our Deb's update.....July 11......by Charlie
It's with sadness that after all Debbie has been through, this has probably been her worst day. Drs found she had a brain infection, called meningitis, pneumonia in her lower left lung, and a urinary tract infection. They started injecting her with three different antibiotics and she was taken back into surgery to remove the shunt that was placed in her head and body on Friday. The fluid drain port was replaced in her right forehead to allow excess spinal fluid to drain and also to inject antibiotics directly. As you might imagine, she is critical and back in ICU.
Her Dad, Herb, and I were told by Dr Varma that all went well but she did not need any company tonight, both for her condition and she would not know we were there anyway. So, we are back at the motel and will try to get some needed rest and see her first thing in the morning.
Thanks so much for all the support and prayers for her and us. We have been told by many of you that we are not alone and it means so much us. And in addition to that, our Lord is still on his throne and in control. May His will be done. May He bless each of you and our Debbie.

July 10--By Herb
Debbie had a good night with Charlie and was resting good when I came in this morning. The nurse seem to think if they closed the blinds, shut of all the lights that she might rest better. They ask me to go to the waiting room for a while giving her some down time in a dark room might help her. I want to thanks Debbie's church friends from Crossville for coming to see her, though she was not to alert, I think she was aware they were there. Thanks again for your love aand prayers for Debbie.

July 9--By Herb
We had a scare last night when Debbie had an elergic reaction to something after surgery and her vital signs went hay wire. Charlie was with her and thought she might die. Many doctors and nurses rushed to her side and now she is responding somewhat to our comands.Seem like there is a setback around every corner but hopefully this will be the last and she can go into rehab next week.I have stayed with her durning the day and Charlie is staying at night and it has worked out well. Thanks again for your support and prayers.
Coming home soon!.....
While Herb and Charlie are holding down the fort in Charleston.......keeping Deb company....and helping her..... Janie, Betty and Brian L are out looking at a rehab center today here in Tennessee......with a little luck Deb will be COMING HOME TO TENNESSEE!.....maybe as soon as the end of next week!....
Wouldn't that be AWESOME!!!!......

Update: Fri./July 8/ 10 p.m. from Charlie
Debbie went into surgery this afternoon alert and very responsive to us. Even had a smile earlier before surgery for Wilma who visited her from TN. The surgery began about 2:45 and went well according to Dr Varma and she was back in her room around 6:00 p.m. Tonight she is still somewhat sedated but responding somewhat sleepily. She is now in x-ray for routine pictures to make sure everything is in place and will have a ct scan at 5 a.m. to be sure it is working properly.
Thanks for all the calls and concerns and visits and expecially the prayers. More tomorrow.
NOTE: Sat morning 5 a.m. Deb's had a somewhat rough night with fever and nausea......Please keep her in your prayers today.

July 7--By Herb
To all our friends I am in Charleston with our Daughter and will be until we are able to transfer to a rehab center. She will have a procedure tomorrow and hopefully that will be the last and we can get her into rehab. She has had a great day and has improved a lot in her communication with us. We are thankful for all who have supported us during this period when we needed prayers for her recovery. Thanks again Herb and Betty
Deb's Update.....Thur morning, July 7 by Charlie
Deb had a good Wed afternoon and night and was alert this morning. She went to sleep last night listening to gospel music on her personal cd player. I know she was enjoying it because her lips were shaping the words to the songs.
Today will be a routine day with meds and exercise and preparing for tomorrow. She will have the shunt procedure Fri afternoon to put in place the permanent internal drain line for any excess spinal fluid to prevent brain pressure. Dr says it's "done all the time" in these cases.
Also, yesterday Deb had a treat. Wonderful friends from Lake Tansi at Crossville came to visit. Walt and Wilma Youree and daughter Vickie Jones visited with us and we could tell Debbie really enjoyed their, especially Wilma's, company. I did also and it was a blessing to see them. We'll be so happy when we're back home and in church with them again. Miss all of you and thanks so much again for all your prayers and concerns and thoughts during this time in our lives.

Morning update on Debbie....July 6...8:30 a.m. by Charlie
Good morning friends.......Yesterday was a busy day for Debbie with a ct scan early and a trip downstairs later to try feeding her a pasty like substance to check her swallowing muscles. She did well but not well enough although I can feed her light amounts of ice regularly, which she really enjoys.......as do I. All in all, she had a very alert and good day yesterday..........BUT............(how I've learned to hate this word)
She had a very restful night with normal wake-ups for meds but this morning at 6 Dr Varma's team arrived and informed me the ct scan showed pressure build-up and they would do a shunt procedure Friday to permanently affix an internal drain to prevent this build-up again. And we could not wake her up this morning, which is a sign of the pressure. In the meantime the spinal drain is re-opened to relieve pressure and she should wake up any time now. So friends and family keep lifting her up to our Heavenly Father. He can take care of this. May He bless you all.

July 4th.........Update by Charlie
No fireworks here today. Deb's condition is basically the same as yesterday. Dr Varna did clamp off the spinal drain to see if she could tolerate it. So far so good. Will do a C T scan tomorrow to check for pressure.
I hope all of you are having a good celebration of the birthday of our country. I pray God's will to be done in it as everything else. Enjoy your day and thanks for all the prayers, calls and thoughts. Deb and I love all of you.

Sunday, July 3........Update by Charlie
Deb had a great Sat. afternoon and night. She has been resting good and when rested, she is so much more alert and responsive........as most of us are. But in her case it really helps. When she becomes fatigued, she just shuts us out. Her sentences and responses are still improving and we are so thankful for the healing hands of our Lord. I believe He placed Debbie in just the right place to get the proper and necessary care during her illness and I know he placed her in my life to strengthen me.
May our Jesus continue to bless her and each of you.

Debbie's update......July 2.......by Charlie
Well, I wasn't going to write today but since I'm out of Deb's room for bath and shampoo time, I'll send a note. (Thought I'd swing a bath and shampoo too, but the nurse gave me directions to the car wash) Deb and I had a good night last night with enough sleep and she had a good sleep again this morning after some pain medicine. She is about the same....Just slightly improved still giving responses and I'm becoming good at lip reading. She still has memory problems but she is able to communicate and that's the main thing. Not much more to tell today........just taking it a day at a time and so thankful for any improvement. Still no decision on when the move back to TN will happen.......Dr Varna is not rushing it and that is what we want.
To all our friends and family, we love you and wish you a great July 4th week-end.
God bless each of you and thank you for continued prayer.

Overload......July 1...........by Charlie
Sorry I did not get around to writing yesterday but things were somewhat hectic and uncertain and Deb and I were both tired last night. Debbie was not as responsive yesterday as the day before for several reasons......She did not sleep hardly at all night before last according to Janie and yesterday Dr Varna decided she had become slightly dehydrated and also whe was probably tired from processing what she had remembered the day before and all the activity she had (my theory). Also, a CT scan late yesterday afternoon came back with a good reading. Anyway, she became more alert and responsive last evening and she and I have had a good night of rest and she is again very responsive and alert this morning. The nurses ran me out of her room at 6 this morning for her bath time and this is the second time I have written this.........Hospital computer took a break on me when I was ready to post earlier......So thanks so much for your continued prayers.......Our Lord is hearing and answering. All praises to Him!

Short and So Sweet!!!! June 29 by Charlie
Well it's me, Charlie, again (not quite as colorful as Janie) but in her words, you have to be a colorful person to write colorfully.
This will be brief because you have already heard about the miracle in Janie's post. I left Sunday for a quick trip to TN with Debbie slightly improving but oh so slowly and today I returned to Charleston to find my Debbie back...PRAISE THE LORD FOR ANSWERED PRAYERS!! Her right side is still weak but her mind is strong. She is learning to speak with the trach voice box but can whisper already and make her own sentences and answers. So wonderful for to be able to tell us how she feels or what she needs or wants. Our God is so powerful and merciful and He has just shown us what He can and will do if only we ask and believe. Praise His Name!

A Breakthrough Day
After my post last night, Deb had a bit of anxiety. I'm not sure what was the cause other than she became really aware of seriousness of her condition. Personally, I think she was feeling a bit sorry for herself. Given the circumstances and how drastically worse her brain condition could be, Thank God that she is aware enough to have a pity party. Amen? Anyway we gave her a little medicine to quiet her and she fell asleep.
Today, she has been alert and attentive to everything anyone wanted to do. The physical therapist was thrilled at the improvement over the last two days. She followed commands and listened intently to what people were saying. I think she now wants to be part of the conversation instead of the topic. I don't think she likes it much that we talk about her like she's not in the room.
We can now begin to hear voice again. They changed out the trach today and we're just beginning to hear her whisper. As her vocal cords get stronger over the next few days we will be able to hear her better. That in conjunction with
her brain healing sounds like she'll be wanting to take control. It might be time for me to leave so she can tell Charlie what to do. :). Seriously, I can't tell you what a relief it is that she is back with us. God is good and has been answering our prayers. Frankly, thanks to all you prayer warriors, I think God has heard her name so much over the last month that He decided to quiet our noise. Keep praying!
Thanks to all

Managing the time clock
It's 930pm and she's semi asleep. She would be fully asleep if she wasn't coughing. The respiratory therapist came in about an hour ago and gave her lungs a cleaning so it stirred up some congestion that she is now trying to get rid of. Other than that we have discovered the perfect sleeping position for her. The key is to only put her in it at night. During the day we have started keeping the lights on high beams and working her limbs to keep her awake. Hopefully, that will get her back on daytime awake and nighttime sleep. That will be imperative when she starts her full-time therapy.
Today, the therapist gave Mom and I specific instructions to work with Deb throughout the day to get her to look to the right and to help her exercise her right arm and leg. I warned Debbie tonight that tomorrow is the first day of boot camp and I am the drill sergeant. I told her she could be mad at me but she's going to do the work.
Anyway, Deb was mouthing words and statements to us all day. That is exciting because tomorrow(Wednesday)they are changing out the trach to include a cap that will allow more air to her voice box so we can hear her. Can't wait.

Progress
Hi all. Janie again.
Well, she made a liar out of me. After I painstakingly typed out the post last night on my iPhone keypad, she went to sleep and slept all night. I in turn also slept all night. That is until they came in at 6am to give her a bath and all the fun stuff they love to do.
She has been a little lazy today. That could be because the physical therapist did some hard work with her this morning. They had her sitting up on the side of the bed following commands. After that Deb put me on ignore. For those who know me know that is a truly hard thing to do, given my dynamic personality. I imagine that means we'll be up again tonight. No worries. We haven't had stay up all night sleep overs in many years.
So I guess you wondered why I titled this post "progress". If the PT sessions aren't good enough I was thrilled this morning when Dr. Varma said that if her physical health continues to improve then they will transfer her to rehab closer to home in about 10 days. Yippee!! In conjunction they are going to clamp off the spinal drain over the next few days to get her body managing the fluid again. Keep praying that her health continues to improve. We want her closer to home so we can be with her more often.
Charlie hung all the wonderful cards she's received and the banner made by her Grandkids and our niece, Brianna, on the wall so she can see them. I added pictures of the whole family on Saturday. She looks at them constantly. She definitely knows she is loved. Thanks to you all for your love and support for Debbie, Charlie, and our family.

From Janie
Hello all! I'm Janie, Debbie's little sister. Since Dad and Charlie took a much needed break, Mom and I are spending some time with Deb.
It's late here in Charleston, but we' re still awake at the hospital. I'm taking the night watch with Deb. As I learned last night she has her days and nights mixed up. She's pretty active in the wee hours.
We've developed a communication system that works, though a bit remedial. I ask yes or no questions and she answers with her eyes. Hey, Whatever works.
Right now she is moving her left arm gradually up her chest as if something is either bothering her or she wants to get a hold of that tubing. The nurse on duty tonight is encouraging her to keep moving so we removed the tight blood pressure cuff for awhile to see what she's going to do with that hand.
Last night we started a new book together. I read and she listens intently all the while watching my lips move. I think we are both enjoying it.
I know that her pastor has been challenging the church to memorize Bible verses, so tomorrow I'm going to get her back on track with learning again. It will be good for both of us.

Update......June 26...............by Charlie
I had a safe trip back to TN and got to be with my wonderful church family and friends for worship and VBS kick-off. Wonderful to see all of you again. No words can express what I am feeling.
I heard earlier just before church from Deb's Mom that Debbie had a good day and was asleep after her work-out with the physical therapist. Not much to report except praise to our Lord for the improvement, no matter how small and for a safe journey. I would like to say a big thanks to Debbie's niece, Briana, for the great bracelets. She had bracelets made for each of us to wear engraved with "Grammy Knows Best" for the grandchildren......Really nice!

Debbie's update......June 25.......9 p.m. by Charlie
Deb has had another good day.....more responsive and resting comfortably. Also her mother and sister arrived from Franklin, TN this afternoon to stay for a few days. I think, no I know, Debbie was glad to see them.....probably quite tired of looking at me and Herb(her father). To those of you who sent the gospel cds and cd player, I have been playing the music to her several times a day...........and I know she likes that.
Since she is in stable condition, and will be in the good company of Betty and Janie, I will travel home to Crossville tomorrow and return Tuesday. Looking forward to seeing some you. Deb's sister Janie will keep you posted for the next few days. God bless each of you and thanks again for everything.

Friday, 6/24, update on Debbie......by Charlie
Due to the clot in Deb's leg, Dr Stryker today surgically implanted a filter into a vessel to prevent movement to any organs. Procedure went well and Deb remains more responsive. She is to be graduated from ICU to a room on 9 east this afternoon...........Great news in that she is more stable.
I will be with her tonight so this will probably be the last update today.
Thanks again to all of you for everything, especially for lifting Deb up in prayer, but most of all, thanks and praise to our Lord Jesus for hearing and answering!

From Betty and Herb
We want to thank all our friends for there cards, phone call, E-mails and there concerns for the recovery of Debbie. We also thank you for all the prayers. We look forward to seeing all of you soon. Betty and Janie will be with her next week and I will be home for a few days.It would appear that her recovery will be slow but we are hoping it will not take to long.We are fine now and excepted this as Gods will and will move on with our lives and take good care of her. God bless all .
Update on Debbie....7 p.m.......6/23/2011
Deb has had a kind of even day. She got a good report on a ct scan this morning and lungs are in great shape. Nurses Grace and Megan have taken great care of her and even gave her a shampoo and brush this afternoon. "But" a scan of her lower legs showed a clot in her left leg. They will decide what to do about it tomorrow and said it was common.............I knew this but sometimes I don't like common! Anyway, she has rested comfortably today and looks great. Thanks again for everything to our wonderful friends and family. Love to you all. This is an 11 p.m. addition to the above: Herb and I went back to the hospital after the previous post and Debbie became more responsive. She responded to questions and requests by closing her eyes and also when we told her we loved her, she would move her lips in response to this and other phrases. What a blessing!
Our Lord is so good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Debbie's update........June 22.....by Charlie...7 p.m.
Deb has had another good day..........Resting comfortably with feeding tube in place so her lovely face is free of all tubes. Still breathing on her own with trach and temp is more easily controlled. Drs say she is doing well but may be a long process for brain to heal. May be moved to a room this week-end. She looks great (doesn't look like she has even been sick)! It will take a while for Deb's healing and our Lord knows how much time she needs.
I am an impatient person but He is teaching me patience. He is still on His throne and in control!
For all Debbie's co-workers at Cumberland County Bank, from Debbie and myself, thank you so much for the food, gifts and cards sent to us in the "care package". So thoughtful and loving of you......Can't wait to be able to tell her. And to all of our friends, thanks so much for your cards, prayers, phone calls, gifts and thoughts.
Debbie and I even received a package with fresh homemade brownies inside (amazingly they arrived ok) through the mail from our dear friends, Valerie and George Mason. We share some of these wonderful treats with Deb's nurses and they love it and are amazed at you folks.
So keep Deb in your prayers and thanks again from everything I am for all your kindnesses.

June 21 update on Debbie by Charlie.....5 p.m.
Overall, Debbie is slightly better than yesterday.........as our Dr says "Always good with a little forward instead of backward". She is breathing on her own through the trach and the pressure tube is to be removed from her head. It was cut off two days ago and pressure has not increased. She is still slow in response but earlier today Nurse Sandy cradled her head and asked her to close her eyes and she obeyed. She then asked her to open them and she did........She also did it for me. Such a small thing to some but a wonderful and beautiful one to me. Praise our Lord!!!!!!!! Thanks again my friends for all you do. We love you!

Debbie's progress report............6/20/2011.....10 p.m. by Charlie
Debbie has had a good day! Breathing tube is out and temporary trach is in and she looks great and seems to be much more relaxed. Responses are slow but slightly improved.......at least they look that way to me. One of the nurses even put some light colored gloss on her lips. They are so good to her. Praise to Jesus!
Dr said we just have to give her time for more progress..........And a lot more prayers!
Also another blessing today.......Kenneth and Anita Apple from Gordonsville, TN (my brother and sister) drove here to see Debbie and are spending the night. Such a blessing for Debbie and I to see them. Their visit means so much to us.

Update on Debbie....8:00 p.m......6-19-2011.......by Charlie
Physically, Debbie has improved again today and we are so thankful for that............."but", such a big word and sometimes so irritating, Dr. Hayes told us she is not responding to suggestions with movements etc. as she had hoped. She said the burst vessel had caused some damage and she is afraid it could be more than they at first thought. This is not fact yet and our Lord can take care of anything. So we will take it one day at a time and pray for her daily. We will see how it goes when the breathing and feeding tubes are removed tomorrow and keep you informed.
All I can say is "we must keep the faith" even in times of trial. May our Lord bless all of you.

June 17, 2011... 8:p.m.....Debbie's update add-on for today by Charlie
Debbie's slight improvement has continued..........She seems to be resting comfortably and breathing is easy...She managed the first big yawn that I had seen earlier so I guess I was boring her. lol
She is still asleep but is giving some movement responses to Dr. Dr. Hayes still says she will be resting until early next week.
God bless you all for your love and prayers!

Debbie's update for June 17,2011 a.m. by Charlie
This morning Debbie had slightly improved vessel numbers and chest x-ray was great. She is resting and breathing comfortably with minimal oxygen. Dr Hayes said she is going to let her rest this week-end to strengthen her even though she is cleared for O R to replace the breathing tube. Prayers are working and we are so thankful.

Debbie's update......June 15.......by Charlie
Debbie had a fairly good day today........Chest x-ray result was improved and she was given a regular bed instead of the roto-rest (looks like a torture chamber to me) bed she has been in. It worked in helping the pneumonia....But there is always the "but", and we got one today...Her brain vessel report numbers were somewhat elevated from yesterday and we didn't want to hear that.....but small steps and we'll get there. Thanks again everyone for every prayer and act of kindness and love.

June 14, Tuesday evening Debbie report............by Charlie
As of 9 p.m. tonight, Debbie was still doing well. Her vitals are almost the same as the a.m. report. Her two night nurses were with her doing their checks and she was resting comfortably. She is off sedation now but will still be some time before she awakens due to the sedation administered and the trauma to her from the attack.
She has now had two good days in a row. Be steadfast in your prayers as I know you are........God is listening. As always thanks to each of you for every act of kindness.

Update on the family by- Herb
The family is holding up very well under the circumstances. Debbie will be here for at least a month and will require a great deal of therapy. Her mother, sister and son will be here this week-end to stay for a few days. We are hoping for some improvement in days to come. Please keep us in your prayers.

Debbie's update.......June 12.....by Charlie
Debbie condition is somewhat better today. The vasospasms significantly decreased today due to the balloons and meds introduced into her brain blood vessels yesterday and Dr is hoping they will remain low after treatment wears off. (2 or 3 days) Chest x-ray was also showing less congestion today......Praise the Lord!
Also, Debbie had some wonderful visitors: Two cousins, Billie Rae Bright and Bud Haynes from Cleveland, GA and our Pastor Scott Johnson and wife Kelly and Bud and Yolanda Heuser (great friends) from Crossville, TN. It was WONDERFUL seeing all of you and thanks so much for coming!

Debbie's Update.......June 12.......by Charlie
Debbie has had a rough day today to say the least. Pneumonia has not improved and vassal blood vessel spasms increased. CT scan confirmed this. She underwent another angiogram at 3:30 this afternoon where 3 vessel balloons were inserted and other medication was used to stop the spasms. This is only a temporary (48 hours) fix and hopefully her body will take over after it wears off. Will keep you posted.
Again, as always, thanks so much for all the prayers, calls, concerns and love given and shown to us.
God bless you all and may the Great Physican take care of Debbie.

Debbie's update.......June 11..........by Charlie
Debbie's day has been mostly uneventful with a barrage of antibiotics to combat the pneumonia. Chest x-ray did show slightly less congestion than yesterday (great news) and test for vassal spasms did not show increase(more great news) Sometimes we must view less as more. Temp has been a problem but this afternoon at 6:30 p.m. IT HAD DROPPED TO NORMAL and she had not had tylenol for over 3 hours, nor had she been subjected to the cooling (I call it the refrigeration mattress) pad since early a.m. We are praying this is a sign the infection is decreasing and antibiotics are working. White cell count had also dropped.
I'd like to say this about the nurses and doctors at MUSC. They are nothing short of FANTASTIC! They not only care exceptionally well for the patient but also the family. I have nothing but good to say about them and their caring, loving, understanding and professional attitudes. They are the best!
Thanks again for all your prayers..........Our Lord is working and can do anything!

Debbie's update......June 10 by Charlie
Debbie has had an up and down day. Her brain blood vessel vassal spasms did not increase from yesterday but at the same time it was determined that she has pneumonia in her right lung. This has put all breathing and feeding changes on hold until next week. Dr Hayes is giving her multiple antibiotics to combat the infection and says her condition is still serious but stable and she is still being kept sedated.
You cannot know how much your continued prayers, calls, love and concern mean to us and we long to be back with you soon.

From Brian L......June 9
Mom had a procedure done today to counteract vasospasm in the brain. The doctor liked what he saw but is still very critical. She still has a breathing tube but is doing it mostly on her own. She is fighting hard. Hats off to UMSC staff! Pray!
from June 8
Update on Debbie: June 8, 2011
Debbie has had a few problems last night and today. High temp, some lung congestion and brain vessel spasms. Nurses and Doctors are doing what is needed and she is responding....More tests tomorrow to confirm progress. She was sedated and resting well at 9 p.m. Thanks for all your prayers and thoughts.
Debbie Haynes Hesson
As everyone probably already knows, Deb suffered a brain aneurysm June 4 while vacationing at Folly Beach, SC. She has been in ICU in a Charleston hospital since then. Her condition is stable but serious.
We will try our best to keep this blog updated and current with her condition.

Updates on Debbie
June 9.....From Charlie
Had a fairly good day today except showing signs of increased vassal spasms in the brain blood vessels. Dr performed surgical procedure this afternoon that disproved this and he gave us a good report. She was resting well at 8:30 tonight. Keep praying. Our God is good!
